5 Tips on Navigating a Boat on Lake Havasu

How to Navigate a Boat

While you can get health benefits from being outdoors, there are also dangers.

If you want to enjoy your time navigating a boat on Lake Havasu, for instance, you have to know what you’re doing. Otherwise, you’re putting you and your passengers at risk.

No matter what size your vessel, these tips will help.

  1. Pay Attention

In 2016, there were nearly 600 accidents and 45 deaths caused by a boat driver not paying attention. This alarming statistic is reason enough to pay attention to the risks involved.

Remember whenever you’re navigating a boat, that is your number one priority. You can still have fun and interact with passengers, but getting them back to the shore safely should always come first.

  1. Stay to the Right

The currents of Lake Havasu run counter-clockwise. That means you need to stay to the right just as if you were driving on the road. This is particularly important when navigating through the channel as there’s not a lot of room for error there.

If you need to cross the lake, do so carefully and always make sure you’re looking out for other vessels so you don’t risk a collision. When passing, always pass on the other boat’s port (left) side.

  1. Know Who Has the Right of Way

Not knowing who has the right of way will put you and your vessel at risk of collision. Here’s how the right of way works on Lake Havasu:

  • Vessels which are towing another vessel have right of way over larger vessels.
  • Larger vessels have right of way over smaller vessels.
  • Non-motorized vessels and sailboats have right of way over motorized vessels.

When you give way to another vessel, make sure you turn in such a way that they see your side well enough to know that you see them and are purposefully avoiding them.

  1. Use GPS

Since Lake Havasu stretches nearly 45 miles in length, it’s easy to get lost if you’re not familiar with the lake. For that reason, you should have a GPS device on board for navigating back to your starting point.

This is especially important for the visitors that come for the year-round water sports at Lake Havasu. Nothing puts a damper on a fun day like getting lost on the lake.

  1. Get a DC

Don’t drink and boat! Instead, get a Designated Captain (DC) to pilot your vessel for you. This will help keep you and your passengers safe. You’ll also avoid legal action for operating a boat under the influence, which carries a hefty fine.

This can be a great way for everyone to enjoy a day at the lake without having to designate a captain from your group. Plus, it’s a lot cheaper than getting fined!

Rent a Boat

Create an Itinerary

If you’re planning a spring break getaway with multiple people, odds are everyone has different tastes. Fortunately, that isn’t a problem as Lake Havasu has a bit of everything.

Avoid conflict and make sure everyone gets to do what they want by creating a daily itinerary.

Pack Accordingly

Finally, bring a first aid kit just in case and don’t forget to brush up on water safety tips. Your boat rental will likely have a first aid kit on board, but it never hurts to be prepared. Include any additional medications that may be necessary for those in your group with allergies.

Reserve Ahead of Time

You’re not the only one gearing up for a great spring break. Avoid additional fees and crowded rental locations by reserving your boat and water sports accessories ahead of time.

The further in advance you reserve, the more you’re likely you’ll get the equipment you desire.

The Health Benefits of Being Outdoors

outdoor activities for health benefitsWe all need a little sun to get our daily dose of healthy Vitamin D. Whether you’re a kid or simply a kid at heart, there are great health benefits of being outdoors.

With today’s fascination with technology, kids and adults alike are spending too much time indoors. This lifestyle often means a lack of movement because we’re either sitting at a computer or lounging on a sofa.

Often, people don’t understand the health risks associated with being inactive for long periods of time.

If you or your child are growing into a couch potato, consider a few of the benefits of getting outside.

Our Bodies Need Vitamin D

Vitamin D is essential for bone health. It absorbs calcium, which promotes bone growth.

There are several ways to get your daily source of Vitamin D, but the natural way is via the sun.

The benefits of the outdoors, particularly during the summer months, will create an uptick in the hormones your body produces from sun rays.

You’ll Be in a Better Mood

Enjoying the outdoors is a good way to improve your mood. Engaging in outdoor sports gets your blood pumping and increases your energy, which in turn improves your overall outlook.

Sometimes kids don’t understand why they’re feeling down or what to do to relieve stress. It’s important that you find activities that shift their focus away from more structured surroundings, that may feel too restrictive, to activities that help them relax and have fun.

Having the freedom to run free and explore nature will have positive effects on their psychological and emotional wellbeing. It’s also a good way for adults to rid themselves of stress, thus contributing to an overall happier home.

Developing Social Skills

Health benefits of outdoor activities include the promotion of social skills through participation in team activities. These sports can also lead to long-lasting friendships.

Children who’re engaged in sports have a better understanding of their environment. They increase their motor skills while improving in coordination and muscle development.

Studies have shown that girls who participate in sports have a more positive body image and increased self-confidence. They also have proven to be more successful.

Research has shown a strong connection between sports and leadership. This connection applies to both men and women.

You’ll Want to Expand Your Horizons

The more time kids spend playing outside, the more things they’ll want to learn. If you live near the water, swimming and other water sports are also healthy outdoor activities.

There are multiple sports that kids and adults can do on the water. Kayaking, water-skiing, and even parasailing to name a few.

Being on the water is a huge stress-reliever. While you’re strengthening your muscles, you’re also improving your mental health.

Are You Ready to Grab the Kids and Head Outside?

Now that you know it’s not only healthy to be outside but also fun, are you ready to try something new?

If the answer is yes, Desert Sun Watersports has everything you need to plan a day of fun in the sun.

3 Reasons Why Lake Havasu Boat Renting Beats Ownership

Lake Havasu boating activitiesThere’s something special about hanging out on a boat.

More than 87 million U.S. adults participate in leisure boating every year, making it one of the most popular recreational activities.

Interested in going boating? Wondering whether to rent or buy? Read on to learn the benefits of boat renting vs. ownership.

  1. Convenience

Lake Havasu is a dream for boating enthusiasts. Located on the border of California and Arizona, it boasts 300 days of sunshine per year. Almost 1 million people each year travel to experience the beautiful beaches and warm waters of Lake Havasu.

If you’re coming to visit, why worry about bringing a boat? Renting a boat eliminates the need to deal with the logistics of getting a boat around and maneuvering it in and out of the water, which requires a lot of skill and practice. Take advantage of boat renting by just pulling up and hopping in when you’re ready to hit the lake.

Don’t know what kind of boat you want? No worries. There are several types to choose from.

  1. Avoid Hidden Costs

Owning a boat is probably more expensive than you think.

Unfortunately, boating accidents can happen. Boat insurance can cost up to $500 a year. Most marinas will require your boat to be insured to dock there. There is also the cost of regular repairs and maintenance.

The cost of gasoline can add up. Your vehicle will require more gas when pulling a boat trailer. Not to mention, you’ll need a vehicle with enough horsepower as well.

If you live in a place where it is not possible to boat year-round, you’ll need to winterize the boat before storing it and then prep it for warmer weather. Both procedures cost a few hundred dollars each.

When boat renting, you don’t need to even think about any of these hidden costs.

  1. Expense of Ownership

The average boat owner only uses their boat 8% of the year. That means 92% of the time it is sitting in storage depreciating.

Boats, like cars, depreciate over time. It’s hard to get the value out of it if you ever decided to sell it.

Watercrafts are very expensive. If you’re looking for the top of the line boat, it can cost you upwards of $100,000. That’s a significant amount of money for something that may go unused most of the year.

Boat renting is beneficial because you don’t have to pay large sums of money upfront and then feel guilty about not using the boat enough to get your money out of it.

Why Own When You Can Rent?

When planning your next trip to Lake Havasu, remember the benefits of renting a boat over owning a boat.

Contact us and we’ll be happy to help you make your trip something truly special.

Trust us. Renting your boat will make your vacation less stressful and allow more time for you to enjoy yourself!

Must-Know Safety Tips for Water Sports for All Ages

water safety

Vacations are a great way to spend time with the family, and you often choose to engage in water sports.

There are multiple sports you can choose from. You can coast along and sight-see by kayak or you can achieve extreme speeds using a jet ski.

Regardless of what water sport you prefer, practicing safety is essential for everyone of all ages.

While you’re booking the adventure of a lifetime, it’s important to know the safety standards before getting in the water.

Don’t let the thrill of the adventure result in an accident! Here are safety tips to practice.

Wear a Life Jacket

There are several important reasons to wear a life jacket — for your kids, it’s required by law.

Don’t think adults can get away with going in the water without a life jacket. The water can be a dangerous place; the waves can get high, there are animals that live in the water, and anyone faces the risk of drowning.

This is key when doing water sports. Say you’re on a jet ski or a boogie board. The waves are good and you’re having a great time.

Then you’ve plunged into the water and you can’t go up to the surface.

No matter how great of a swimmer you are, the risk of drowning is always upon you. Avoid this by wearing a life jacket.

Make Sure Your Gear is Great Quality

Water sports always makes for a fun afternoon. However, what happens when your gear breaks or causes problems? You’ll have no choice but to take the rental boat back to the dock. Or worse- you risk the boat breaking down without you being able to get back.

Always make sure your gear is top-quality. If you’re vacationing, it’s easy to overlook gear quality; the expenses of the trip add up and you may settle for cheap equipment.

You need to understand your safety is at risk and needs to be taken seriously. When renting, be sure to choose a quality, experienced facility with safe rental equipment.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

It’s easy to get caught-up in the moment while you’re out on the water. You need to keep in mind that you’re still in the great outdoors. You’re emerging on territory that is not yours. It’s owned by the environment and by the animals who reside in the water.

When you’re out on a lake, you probably don’t think you risk any wildlife or freshwater animals. It’s important to be aware of their environment while looking after your own safety in the meantime.

Have Fun with Water Sports

Water sports are a great way to have fun with your family and friends.

Whether you enjoy the meditative state of parasailing or the rush of water skiing, anyone can find fun in sports. Remember these safety tips — you don’t want your fun day going seriously wrong.

A Brief History Of Boating In Lake Havasu

boating activities

Lake Havasu, Arizona, is one of the best boating destinations in the United States.

No matter if you want to cruise with your pontoon boat or crank up the speed on a race boat, there is room for you and yours. This lake is no ordinary boating experience. Locals and visitors alike come together to enjoy the many lake-side beaches, open cruising space, and deep waters.

Once you dock, the town is waiting to keep the fun going with various restaurant and shopping options.

As active as the boating activities are in Lake Havasu, it wasn’t always this way.

Here’s a brief history on the origins of this area and how boating in Lake Havasu became the thing to do.

The Early Days

Lake Havasu used to not even be a lake at all. It was once just another piece of the Colorado River, until the construction of a dam in 1930.

Before then, though, the area was a prime trapping and mining destination in the early 1800s. The space was known among mountain men, Mohave Indians, and Spanish explorers. Over time, the Mohave Indians pushed back trappers and the region was mostly calm.

The first boat to cruise through Lake Havasu was the Uncle Sam in 1854. Fishing camps were established along the banks. These later became testing areas for the American Air Force in World War II.

The Start of a City

After the war, a wealthy man with a vision discovered a piece of desert surrounding Lake Havasu. The man was Robert P. McCulloch, a wealthy entrepreneur and engineer.

McCulloch had a vision for his motor company to thrive in the area and much bigger hopes to establish a buzzing community. He purchased Scott-Atwater Company in 1956, a local motor business specializing in boats.

In less than ten years, his company was one of the largest boat motor providers in the world. Much of the testing was done in Lake Havasu.

McCulloch made a point to attract potential investors and tourists to the area as well. Throughout his life, he opened Lake Havasu Hotel and established a manufacturing plant to boost the local economy.

One of his biggest contributions was the London Bridge. Yes, in 1968, a man originally from Missouri purchased the historic London Bridge. Over the next three years, each brick was documented, packed, transported, and put back in place in Lake Havasu.

It was a turning point in the history of boating in Lake Havasu.

The bridge turned what was once a peninsula into the well-known lake island it is today. It also gathered interest from boaters from far and wide, which still has a charm years later.

Boating in Lake Havasu Today

Lake Havasu locals are both enthusiasts and experts in the world of boating.

Visitors can rest assured whatever kind of boat they have is welcome on the lake. There are also many repair shops in town, meaning your boat is sure to be in good hands no matter what it needs.

Boaters can enjoy a day of fishing, swimming, and all kinds of water sports.

There are no-wake zones for those who prefer to take it easy. Families can also enjoy barbecue grills, restrooms, and picnic areas established all around the lake.

5 Fun Facts About the London Bridge in Lake Havasu

tourist attractionLake Havasu is known for many things.

For instance, it’s known across the nation as one of the most gorgeous areas in all of Arizona. It’s renowned for its active water sports community, its arid temperature, and its year-round tourism.

Did you know that it’s also beloved for the London Bridge?

Yes, you’re reading that right! London Bridge is one of the most popular destinations in all of Lake Havasu. These 5 facts will tell you why the London Bridge is something that needs to be seen.

1. It Isn’t the First London Bridge

Did you know that the London Bridge in Lake Havasu isn’t the first iteration of the famous bridge?

If you’re not well-versed in British history, the details can be a bit confusing. In actuality, there have been 3 total variations on the London Bridge. The first was estimated to have been built around 1209, making it one of the oldest bridges in the world.

What sits on the waters of Lake Havasu today is the second iteration, and its story is remarkable.

2. …But It Really Is the London Bridge

Make no mistake, the London Bridge in Lake Havasu we know and love really is part of history. While tons of tourist spots are known for their recreations, what sits on Lake Havasu is the real deal.

So how did it get here, anyway?

The details date back to the 1960s when the second iteration of the famous bridge began sinking. Deterred and a little concerned, the citizens of London decided to scrap the bridge and build a replacement.

Originally, they planned on simply discarding the remains of the once-famous bridge. That is until an eccentric billionaire named Robert McCulloch stepped in and bought it for $2,460,000.

3. It Had to Be Rebuilt From Scratch

Truthfully, nobody expected McCulloch’s plan to work. Not only was it expensive, but the bridge needed an extensive rebuilding period.

In fact, there wasn’t any water near the bridge during the time of construction. It was only later that millions of gallons of water were added to the barge.

The result of the digging and construction is what we now know as Pittsburgh Point.

4. McCulloch’s Plan Worked

At the time of the bridge’s reconstruction, Lake Havasu was struggling. Only a few thousand residents lived in the town and tourism was just a wishful thought.

After construction ended, the residents noticed a change. The bridge was such a popular tourist attraction that thousands of people from across the U.S. came to see it.

While the citizens of Lake Havasu initially laughed off McCulloch’s plan, it worked. In fact, it worked swimmingly, and the bridge is still a tourist attraction to this day.

5. The London Bridge In Lake Havasu Is Standing History

The bridge is good for more than just a great story, however. You can still see the visible wear and tear from bullets and mortars from World War II.

History buffs will feel like they’ve traveled back in time seeing the very real damage this historic bridge withstood.

Visit Lake Havasu Today

Whether you’re here for a day or a week, you can’t miss seeing the London Bridge in Lake Havasu. It’s a fantastic, strange part of our history and we’re sure you’re going to love it.
